It's no secret, given my job and my passion for it, that nutrition is very important to me. Over the past 6 months I have switched our eating habits to 90% 'clean'...that basically means no processed foods...no foods out of bags, boxes, containers, etc. While this does add more work, I personally feel the end result is so worth it for my family. Everyone is different and that is totally okay! For our family, we are trying to limit refined sugars, nasty artificial flavorings (and especially artificial colors...that's a whole other can of worms) and white flour. That doesn't mean that we don't have occasions or times that we eat non-clean because we do splurge from time to time (anyone been to Scratch Cupcakery?? Oh my!). So this means that I make pretty much everything from scratch. I've found awesome kid-friendly recipes and make on a weekly basis: granola bars (way better than store bought), cheese crackers, vanilla wafers, whole wheat banana muffins, chocolate zucchini bread, macaroni & cheese, and lots of yummy foods for Andy and I. Whole Foods and Trader Joes are my top spots to buy quality ingredients that are all natural (Whole Foods natural peanut butter is the best and so are their brown rice cakes!) Our favorite weekend treat is homemade buttermilk pancakes (for the boys). I always have the best helper! On Saturday we decided to make them extra special--we added semi-sweet natural chocolate chips.
